 Being an Upstander is a characteristic that is essential for the support of democracy. The Horace Mann Upstanders Children's Book Award is given each year to acknowledge an author for creating a fictional character who recognizes injustice and acts in a way to right a wrong thus bringing to children examples of Upstander behavior worthy of their emulation.
